Operational Technology Security.

Operational Technology (OT) environments present a different cyber security challenge. The systems that control physical processes, production and critical operations were often designed for reliability and longevity rather than today’s cyber threats.  Applying traditional IT security controls without understanding the operational context can create risks of its own.

At i-confidential, we help organisations understand and manage cyber risk across their operational environments. We bring together cyber risk, security architecture, governance and resilience expertise, complemented by specialist OT capability from our trusted associate and partner network where required.

Our aim is to protect operational environments without compromising the operation.

OT Security is a Business Risk challenge

At i-confidential we believe effective OT security starts with understanding what matters to the business.

Rather than beginning with technology or a checklist of controls, we look at the operational processes that matter most, the systems and dependencies that support them, the threats they face and the potential consequences of disruption.

That creates a risk-led basis for deciding where security investment will have the greatest impact, and where conventional IT security approaches may need to be adapted for the operational environment.

FAQ's

How is OT cyber security different from traditional IT security?

Operational environments have different priorities, technologies and consequences of failure. Availability and safety can be critical, systems may have much longer lifecycles, and activities that are routine in IT, such as patching, vulnerability scanning or deploying endpoint software and these may require considerably more operational consideration. OT security therefore needs to balance cyber risk reduction with operational reliability and safety.

Do you provide specialist OT engineering expertise?

Our core strength is cyber security, risk and resilience. Where an engagement requires deeper OT engineering or technology-specific expertise, we work with experienced specialists from our trusted associate and partner network. This allows us to assemble the right capability for the environment and challenge rather than pretending that every OT problem can be solved by a conventional cyber security team.

Can you assess our current OT cyber security maturity?

Yes. We can assess the current environment, governance, controls and resilience arrangements, identify material gaps and help prioritise improvements according to business and operational risk. Assessments can be aligned with recognised OT security standards and frameworks such as ISA/IEC 62443 and NIST SP 800-82 but we use the most appropriate standards as a reference point while focusing on the risks, operational realities and outcomes that matter to your organisation.

Can you help us prepare for an OT cyber incident?

Yes. We can help organisations understand OT-specific cyber scenarios, clarify roles and decision-making, review incident and recovery arrangements, and exercise relevant teams. The emphasis is not simply on detecting an attack, but on understanding how the organisation would maintain or safely recover critical operations.

Where should we start if we don't have an established OT security programme?

Start with the operation rather than the security tooling. Understand your critical processes, the technology they depend on, how those environments connect to other systems and third parties, and what the consequences of disruption would be. That provides the basis for identifying the risks that matter and prioritising security investment accordingly.

What We Deliver

  • OT cyber risk assessments – Identifying critical operational processes, threats, vulnerabilities and business consequences.

  • Security maturity and gap assessments – Assessing existing capabilities against appropriate OT security good practice and identifying pragmatic priorities.

  • OT security architecture and control reviews – Reviewing segmentation, connectivity, remote access, identity, monitoring and other key controls through an operational risk lens.

  • OT cyber resilience and incident preparedness – Helping organisations understand how an OT cyber incident could unfold and improving response, recovery and crisis management arrangements.

  • OT security strategy and improvement roadmaps – Turning technical findings into prioritised, achievable programmes aligned to operational and business risk.

The Outcome

  • A clearer understanding of where OT cyber risk could materially affect the business.

  • A prioritised and proportionate security roadmap, rather than a generic list of technical remediation activities.

  • Greater operational resilience, with security controls designed around the realities of the environment they are protecting.

Safety as a priority without compromising security

OT security is about understanding the consequences of compromise and making informed decisions about how best to reduce that risk without introducing unnecessary operational risk in the process.

Our Approach

We take a pragmatic, risk-led approach to OT security.

We work with security, technology, engineering and operational stakeholders to understand the environment and translate technical vulnerabilities into meaningful business and operational risk.
From there, we help organisations identify proportionate improvements. These might include stronger segmentation and access controls, improved visibility and monitoring, better governance, or greater preparedness for cyber incidents affecting operational systems.

Where deeper specialist engineering or OT technology expertise is required, we complement our core team with experienced specialists from our associate and partner network.

The objective is to apply security in a safe way that reflects how the operation actually works.
